Silver Fin Solutions is building a platform as a conservation entity to include:
1) Transparent Information Exchange to inform managers for controlling and managing invasive carp species
We accomplish this by partnering with federal, state, and local agencies and universities to clearly communicate each project’s goals and to utilize Best Management Practices that are developed with consideration of the agencies’ expectations regarding fish removal, by-catch, and public recreation.
2) Research and Development (R&D) of novel techniques for harvest/removal of invasive carp species
We use the latest technologies to develop, implement, and assess new fish-harvest methods and gear. Some of our new equipment designs include modified electric trawls, specialized seining/harvest nets combinations, specialized Dozer and Paupier fish sampling/removal systems. We are developing unique removal equipment such as barges with an industrial fish pump and a heavy crane to accommodate large hauls of contained fish. We also utilize large boats to transport the fish to trucks which haul the them to processors.
3) Partnership and marketing for zero waste utilization of invasive species (e.g., rendering, meal, fillet)
To utilize all harvested fish to maximize benefits of invasive fish removal, we partner with commercial fishers, fish processors, bait dealers, fish meal plants, and compost researchers. We also support Ranken Technical College by offering on-site education on data collection and harvest techniques, and by working with the college to research production of high-quality fish meals including fish patties, nuggets, and sticks.
